Wilson County Court Guide: Where Lebanon's Courts Actually Are

Wilson County's civil courts are split between the Judicial Center at 134 South College Street and the General Sessions court at 115 East High Street in Lebanon. Which building hears your case, clerk hours and phones, the Chancery rules on phones and dress, and jury contacts.

The building called the Wilson County Courthouse, on East Main Street in Lebanon, is mainly county offices. For a civil court date, you are most likely headed to the Judicial Center on South College Street or to 115 East High Street, where General Sessions Courts I and II sit.

Wilson County's court buildings catch people off guard. The building named the Wilson County Courthouse, at 228 East Main Street in Lebanon, houses county offices such as the County Clerk, County Mayor, Register of Deeds, and Trustee. The courts are elsewhere: at the Judicial Center on South College Street and at the General Sessions court on East High Street.

The two buildings for civil cases

  • Wilson County Judicial Center, 134 South College Street, Lebanon, TN 37087. The county lists the Circuit Court Clerk, the Clerk and Master, Drug Court, Family Court, Juvenile Child Support Court, Probate Court, and court security here. The Clerk and Master's office is in Room 200. Circuit Civil Court: (615) 444-2042.
  • General Sessions Courts I and II, 115 East High Street, Lebanon, TN 37087: (615) 444-2045. Detainer (eviction) hearings are held here.

The Circuit Court Clerk's office serves as clerk for General Sessions, Circuit Civil, Circuit Criminal, and Juvenile Court. The Clerk and Master handles Chancery Court and can be reached at (615) 444-2835. The state court directory lists the Circuit Court Clerk at 115 East High Street, so call (615) 444-2045 to confirm which window handles your filing.

Office hours

  • Circuit, Criminal, Family Court, and Juvenile offices: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • General Sessions: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Clerk and Master: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Phones, food, and courtroom conduct

The Clerk and Master's posted rules of conduct are strict, and worth reading before a Judicial Center hearing:

  • No cell phones or other electronic devices in the Judicial Center or courtroom.
  • Everyone entering the courtroom is subject to search.
  • No food or drink in the courtroom.
  • No shorts, tank tops, halter tops, or bare midriffs.

The 15th Judicial District's local rules add that litigants and witnesses should not dress in a way that distracts from courtroom decorum, and they prohibit reading, smoking, chewing gum or tobacco, eating, or drinking in the courtroom. The Wilson County Sheriff's Office provides court security for the county's courts. The county does not publish a full list of prohibited items, so leave weapons and anything you do not need at home.

Parking

I have not found official parking guidance for the Judicial Center or the High Street building. Give yourself extra time to find a space, and call the clerk for your court if you are unsure where to go.

General Sessions, Circuit, or Chancery?

  • General Sessions Court (civil): Tennessee law caps General Sessions civil cases at $25,000, with no dollar limit in detainer cases (Tenn. Code Ann. § 16-15-501). Detainer warrants are filed in General Sessions Courts I and II.
  • Circuit Court: civil cases including domestic relations and personal injury. Under Tennessee law, General Sessions civil appeals go to Circuit Court. The clerk asks that General Sessions appeals be filed through the clerk's office rather than online filing, and before close of business on or before the deadline.
  • Chancery Court: a civil court of record, served by the Clerk and Master at the Judicial Center.

Jury duty

Wilson County's jury coordinator can be reached at (615) 444-2042, option 1, and the juror panel line is (615) 443-2605. The county does not publish a reporting location or check-in time online, so follow the instructions on your summons and call the jury coordinator with questions.

Case records, filing, and payments

The Wilson County Online Court Records System, at wilson.tncrtinfo.com, is the county's online records and payment site for the Circuit Court Clerk's courts. The clerk accepts electronic filing through an online upload form for Circuit Court, General Sessions III, and Juvenile Child Support. For Chancery Court records, contact the Clerk and Master's office.

Accessibility

The Tennessee Judicial Branch's ADA contacts page lists a contact for Wilson County, and the state's ADA coordinator can be reached at (615) 741-2687. Accommodations such as an interpreter can take time to set up, so make the request well before the hearing.

A Wilson County civil practice

Wilson County is one of the Middle Tennessee counties where I try civil cases, including landlord-tenant matters in General Sessions and real estate and business disputes in Circuit and Chancery Court. For a Wilson County matter, send the office a message.
